Overview
Petronet LNG Ltd (PETRONET) is a public limited company incorporated in India in 1995. It is a joint venture of four state-owned oil and gas companies: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), GAIL (India) Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Petronet is the largest importer and marketer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in India. It operates two LNG terminals in Dahej, Gujarat, and Kochi, Kerala. The Dahej terminal has a capacity of 17.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and the Kochi terminal has a capacity of 5 MTPA.
Petronet's main customers are power plants, fertilizer plants, and city gas distribution companies. It also supplies LNG to the domestic market through its own network of pipelines.
History
Petronet was formed in response to the growing demand for natural gas in India. The country's natural gas production was not keeping pace with demand, and the government was looking for ways to import LNG.
Petronet's first LNG terminal at Dahej was commissioned in 2004. The Kochi terminal was commissioned in 2013.
How the company operates
Petronet imports LNG from countries such as Qatar, Oman, and Australia. The LNG is transported to India by specially designed tankers.
The LNG is then regasified at Petronet's terminals. The regasified LNG is then transported to its customers by pipelines or road tankers.
The future
Petronet is planning to expand its LNG import capacity. It is also planning to build new pipelines to transport LNG to new markets.
Petronet is also looking to expand its LNG marketing business. It is planning to enter new markets, such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Conclusion
Petronet is a leading player in the Indian LNG market. It is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for LNG in India.
